Humanitarian assistance at IHH focuses on mobilizing and coordinating local, national and international actors to strengthen crisis response and deliver timely aid to affected communities across India. It prioritizes locally led action, strong partnerships, and innovative solutions to reduce suffering during disasters and emergencies.
A flood relief response was carried out by Aaina in the Bhograi and Jaleswar blocks of Balasore district, Odisha, following severe flooding caused by heavy monsoon rains and the upstream release of dam water into the Subarnarekha River. The situation significantly impacted families, farmlands, and livestock across several low-lying and vulnerable villages.
Aaina’s response focused on ten villages in the Bhograi block—Khalabadia, Rasalpur, Kumbhargadi, Patharghata, Manuanagar, Barabatia, Nathipur, Aruhabrutti, Khardipipal, and Aruhabrutti-2—and two villages in the Jaleswar block, Devkumar and Namkana.
During the response, over 2,600 families, including 319 persons with disabilities, were identified for immediate support. Final beneficiary selection was carried out by village-level committees comprising Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, SHG members, persons with disabilities, community leaders, and at least 50% women members, ensuring a fair, inclusive, and transparent process.
Special priority was given to pregnant and lactating women, single-woman households, elderly persons, children, and children with disabilities. In addition to material assistance, awareness programmes on hygiene and emergency safety for women and children were conducted across all 12 villages.
Care was taken to ensure that the response remained inclusive, community-led, and focused on those most vulnerable to the impacts of the disaster.
